Breakable Objects

Week 12 lecture

The week 12 lecture in my opinion was very interesting and a great eye opener to the future possibilities of gaming engines, such as cry engine, UDK and many others. For the duration of the lecture, the guest lecturer, Jeremy Harkins explored the endless possibilities real-time interactive environment, in comparison to their obsolete alternative of photo montage/rendering.

Showing us examples of what his newly founded company has produced and they type of work the produce was a very good eye opener for the future trends and possibilities of real time interactive environment through computer gaming engines.

Strategy For Trailer

The overall theme/ strategy for my trailer will be based around the movie "I am Legend", which throughout the movie explores the extensive amount of decay experienced throughout a large urban city like New York.

The beginning of the trailer will provide clip extracts from the actual movie itself, setting the vibe, mood and the context in which the whole of the human race, except one man who lives in wilderness of the bush.  This lone man lives in the decayed house in the wilderness, secluded and away from the beasts, the animals which have taken over the city.

Through the second half of the trailer, the notion of decay throughout the mans house is explored.  The specific use of music was used to heighten, emphasis and convey the messages to the viewer.

Plan For Movie Trailer

Aim: To explore and illustrate the state of decay, structural failure, materiality, abandonment of a seminal piece of architecture, 100 years after the end of human life on earth.

Premise: That "the most architectural thing about [a] building is the state of decay in which it is. Architecture only survives where it negates the form which that society expects of it. Where it negates itself by transgressing the limits that history has set for it". (Tschumi)

Week 11 Lecture

Our second last lecture for the year was very interesting and intriguing.  We explored further how to make our environments more realistic and highly detailed.  Russel showed a few demonstrations of how we can use the properties of each program in conjunction with plugins to create the up most realistic environment.

Explaination Of Trailers & Scope For Final Trailer

I looked at a wide range of trailers, movies and short films.  Each media form explored a different structure, composition, subject, and way of communicating decay, despair and forensic architecture.  However, evident in each media form, was a recurring emotion felt and created by the subject matter of the media.  Evoking emotions of fear, helplessness, curiosity, amazement and trepidation are created in each movie.

Such emotion is evoked through the following ways:

  • the use of contrast between the environments in a working, inhabited state, to how they lye in the decrepit, disheveled state.
  • the flashing of images showing extensive decay
  • showing images or scenes where places, objects or images are shown in a damaged and abandoned state that the viewer can relate to, including children's painting on walls, children's book, lounge rooms, community centers and etc.  This effective use of scene and image depiction is highly effective as the viewer can heavily relate to the images being shown, creating an earry, confronting and realistic impact on viewer

Other key things and techniques i gathered from these film clips include:
  • the decrepit image of a building with broken windows and curtains blowing in the wind creates a more realistic and believable image
  • voice over in the beginning of the movie sets the context and mood
  • emotive music, perfectly timed to coincide with images and scenes shown heightens the mood and emotion
  • text inserts against a black scene also heightens the mood and emotion
  • transport is frequently used to symbolise the environment in its peak, and the symbolism of a train line depicts the period of movement into the environment
  • throughout scenes many objects have hidden meanings and representations, that make direct reference and contrast to what was, and what is. E.g. Books on the ground ripped and under rubble can have the hidden meaning of education, society, sophistication and prosperity. Meaning that the education, society, sophistication and prosperity of that environment is now ripped, ruined, and smothered by rubble.

Week 10 Reflection

The Natural effects of Weathering and other disasters on structures and environments is one of the greatest forces that forms reshapes and reconfigure's what once was in a working and habital state.  In the lecture today we looked at many different ways weathering and disasters can impact and adversely change materials used in architecture.  The effects and ramifications of weathering and disasters, as highlighted in today's lecture are a key aspect that needs to be reconstructed in our virtual environments to increase the reality of the scene to the viewer.

Week 9 Lecture

Today's Lecture explored different types of structure and how each structure is affected and looks after they have been abandoned or affected by a natural disaster.  Russel also showed us the different plugins we can use to increase the realistic and truth in our structures and textures.  Also in todays tut we were shown how to create breakable objects in 3DS Max which i also found was very interesting and would greatly add to the realistic nature of the structure and environment.

Material Research

The House Of Bordeaux
The combinations of materials recurring stress dualism: the cement is in contrast to the glass and aluminium, creating a fascinating structural ambiguity.
Empty and filled, the introverted and extroverted, encourage both the façades and interiors along with the search asymmetry, and are made possible thanks to ingenious structural and functional solutions.   (http://en.wikiarquitectura.com/index.php/House_in_Bordeaux)
The materials of the building include;
  • plastic curtains
  • chrome
  • concrete
  • steel
  • wooden floor boards
________________________________________________________________
  1. Concrete
    Formation
Normal concrete is generally made of cement, course aggregate, sand, water, chemical mixtures and other ingredients.   There are two common types of concrete, these include reinforced concrete and normal concrete. Reinforced Concrete involves the introduction of steel bars in the form of grids into concrete.  In normal concrete, steel reinforcement is generally not found.
    Decay Characteristics
    There are a number of reasns and ways concrete can and does decay, these include;
     - Concrete cancer or alkali-silica reaction (ASR)
Alkali silica reaction is caused by a reaction between unreacted calcium oxide (in cement mixture) reacting with the silica used in aggregate, producing a gel like substance that swells as it drains water from surrounding cement.

     - Expansion of metal reinforcement
the expansion of the metal reinforcements is caused by the corrosion of metal reinforcements causing them to expand. the corrosion process happens much quicker if the reinforcement is placed to close to the surface of the concrete during construction.
  2. Steel
    Formation
Steel is a mixture of iron and carbon, with carbon having the largest percentage of the mixture.  Iron is derived from the earths crust in the form of an ore.  Steel is essentially iron, but with less imperfections and with greater strength properties.

There are two ways to form steel, The Open-Hearth Furnace and The Bessemer Process.  The Open-Hearth Furnace is where iron, limestone and other ingredients are heated to over 900 degrees Celsius. The impurities found, including carbon are oxidised and float out of the iron.  The other way is the Bessemer Process which involves the oxidation of the impurities blowing air through the molten iron in a Bessemer Converter.
  3. Chrome Plate
    Formation
Chrome plating is the technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal or plastic object.  The layer can be decorative, to provide corrosion resistance and serves many other purposes.

Lecture 8 Reflection

This weeks lecture summed up experiment one, and introduced experiment two "life After People".  We explored the aim of the second experiment to explore the forensics of architecture in terms the decay and degradation 100 years after human.   In the lecture we viewed a lot of images and movies that depicted and explored the decay of architecture, and through those videos and images, i was able to visualise what i will be producing for the experiment two trailer.

Barcelona Pavillion

The Barcelona Pavilion, in cooperates many different materials other than concrete and glass, including plastic, marble and ceramics.  The Building is a one storey Pavilion that would experience different structures and structural failures that would be experienced over time.

House at Bordeaux

Voted in the year of its construction the most beautiful house in the world, the House of Bordeaux is a very interesting and heavily detailed structure that is mostly comprised of concrete, steel and glass.  The house of Bordeaux would be a very interesting structure to analyse through a time lapse.

Rudin House

The exterior of the home on face value may seem very simple and basic, however the interior of the house and its structure and construction is very complex.

Comprised mainly of concrete, the roof and walls give an impression of the house as a single element, but on a smaller scale, eves and other elements start to become evident.

Week Seven Lecture Reflection

As Russel stated in the beginning of the lecture "I didn't take into count a an extra week for an extension in my lecture plans", week sevens lecture was all about track view within cry engine.  Russel also stated some differences between the new and old engines that we can use to our advantage.

Marking Schedule

Week Six Lecture Reflection

Lecture six looked at how different movie trailers have been conveyed to evoke, engage, and summarise a story line. Trailers are used to create suspense or to be informative of the subject they are displaying. Each trailer has its own strategy for revealing and concealing a scene, storyline or key elements within a movie. Today’s lecture was about how we should in our island movie have a specific, distinctive and significant strategy for revealing and concealing our island.

From today's lecture the 'Three Acts' of a successful trailer were explored; 1. The setting up of characters and particular views, 2. Then the main 'creative thrust' of the movie, 3. Then finally, the key moment, a climatic finish.

In most movie's the final scene acts as a collage or montage with an intensity of music. Brief snapshots, followed by a small sentence/key word is also a effective way of producing a successful trailer. Finally, when choosing the right song, we should aim to choose a song that has a variety of highs and lows – acting as a guideline of how long a shot should be.

Strategy for Concealing and Revealing of letter and number

The task of creating a trailer that presents my custom island in a way that is distinctive and significant to my place of origin and my main concept is a challenging task. Through researching ways to create an effective and evocative trailer, I was able to summarise eight main ways in which I intend to use to my advantage to be distinctive and significant in the revaluation of my letters and numbers. These include;
  • use evocative music that the reader can interact with,
  • slow-motion,
  • people running/walking,
  • use of scale,
  • impacts/explosion,
  • fade to black,
  • rapid edits,
  • dialogue or inter-titles.
Trying to in-cooperate all of these features, as well as revealing all the letters and numbers is a difficult task in the limited time we have to convey and explore our island.

For my trailer I intend to only focus on revealing a few to ensure that my video is understandable, has a clear story line and is not overwhelmed by the revelation of letters and numbers.

I want my trailer to tell a story, whilst being engaging. For my trailer to be individual and significant to my place of origin and custom island, I have to create a story line that makes sense and is easily understood. My trailer will be a progression - starting out with the death of the main character, then following the characters ghosts' quest to answers as to why he is there. The character is unaware to the fact that he is actually dead.

My trailer is going to follow the story line of a man who on an island, but doesn’t understand why he is the only one there. The very first scene of my trailer will reveal a blackhole(hence the title will be 'the blackhole'), and to the left of the blackhole formed out of rocks will be the first revelation of my number seven.

I will use the scenes of the blackhole more than once in my video, allowing it to act a a recurring motif throughout the movie. The symbolism behind the blackhole on the island and movie will explore the conceptual opposition between the truth of what the character is unable to see, and the deception that he is experiencing, as well as acting as a metaphor for death, and in particular his death.

The scene will then progress to a large scale view of two other small islands, which will be used as the characters 'quest' to find answers. The binoculars are used to depict the man’s search, in which he will see a distant '500'. This distant 500 is used as a way to not only conceal, but also reveal the first letter 'D'. This is concealed as 'D' is the Roman numeral for 500.

The trailer will then progresses to the man running through the bush, coming to a t- intersection. The t- intersection is suppose act as a continuation of his quest. Whilst the man is stopped he looks to his right, up the trail revealing the purposely shaped '7' in the road. The man also glances straight ahead multiple times in which we will see an evident VII ('7') projected on to the rocks in front of him. In this same scene the transition and repetition of the scene in day light and darkness will illustrate that the man has been searching all day and all night.

Memories of the character will then flash back in a rapid manner signifying what he is thinking. It is in these flashbacks that more numbers and letters will be revealed.

the final scene will revert back to the opening scene where the character is falling into the blackhole. However this time I intend to slow the frames down and colour the clips black and white to signify the man's long quest coming to an end, his memories becoming a blur and the realisation he is dead.

Lecture Four Reflection

Lecture four addressed the focus of the Sublime (the macro).  The history of the sublime goes back to the mid-18th Century, when there was an outburst between art and sublime - Something that was once beautiful turned into something that was feared.

James Wards Gordale Scar was a large painting of a gorge that created and evokes a feeling of terror and fear, an image that represented the walls as if they were going to close and crush you.  One point a gathered from this week’s lecture was that to create a virtual real time realistic environment, you need to create something that is evocative and induces a feeling on its user.

Capability Brown Inspiration Environment Images

In the above image (left) Capability Brown uses the vegetation on the edge of the river as a vocal vanishing point.  I have tried to recreate this vocal/vanishing point through lining a channel of water with vegetation in my environment, as well as using his image framing/capturing techniques.

In a lot of Brown's images he uses a great deal of low perspective view angles.  I have taken this into consideration when i captured the image of the wrecked car, which is gradually revealed as you look up the image.

In the above image (top left) Capability Brown uses man made structures such as the bridge and folly as a way to frame an image.  I have adapted Browns framing technique by  using dilapidated structures within my environment specifically placed to create a realistic and evocative framed image.

In this image i took Brown's concept of using a building as a distant feature, a focal feature that is revealed through the foreground of the trees.
